Water Damage from Sprinkler Systems

Water Damage from Sprinkler Systems
Fire sprinkler systems offer reliable and affordable fire protection to your commercial properties. Not only do sprinkler systems prevent lives and property losses from fires, but also save millions of dollars to business owners by way of tax deductions, code and ordinance compliance, insurance savings, and the ability to continue business as usual. But for as beneficial as sprinkler systems may be in reducing harm caused by a fire, the downside is the wet mess they leave behind. Water, Water Everywhere? Not Really. To prevent a fire from spreading and causing widespread damage, if not a total loss, the sprinkler systems springs into action as soon as a fire is detected. This typically occurs during the “flashover” stage, or when the fire transitions from the “growing” stage to the last stage--a fully developed fire. Sprinkler systems can address the specific area of the fire, preventing the spread. This may seem...

Preventing Kitchen Fires

Preventing Kitchen Fires
All too often we hear of someone innocently starting to deep fry some chicken, or fries or a tortilla, leave the kitchen for "just a minute" and come back in to a blazing stove top.  The mess a fire  like this creates is unbelievable. I spent a few minutes reviewing a report from  the University of Maryland  and it's Department of Fire Protection Engineering.  In among all the statistics for how quickly different oils ignite were the sobering facts about residential fires.  They account for 1/4th of fire incidents but they're also responsible for 75% of fire related deaths and injuries.  Eighty eight percent of fires leading to deaths were on the range or cook top and 93% of these "food ignition fires" began with the ignition of cooking oil. Further considerations in cooking with oil... Cooking oil and fire Oil is a key ingredient found in the majority of...

Clothes Dryer Fires - A Simple Prevention

Clothes Dryer Fires - A Simple Prevention
A recent survey showed in a 4 year period 1 in 22 home fires involved either a washing machine or a dryer.  The dryer fires are really fairly easy to prevent with just a few simple steps.  We have them listed below... Clean out your lint screen Each Time you use the dryer.  It's fast and easy.  Think of it as depriving the fire of any food! Check your vent hose.  Make sure it's in good shape.  Did you know the white plastic hoses have been outlawed?  These aren't safe and need to be replaced.  Use the aluminum type, just make sure the length is as short as possible and don't crush or kink it when you push the machine back. Clean the vent line regularly.  It's so important this line isn't clogged with lint since it can greatly increase the chance of a dryer fire.  If you cannot clean the line by...

Replacement Cost vs. Actual Cash Value Insurance - which?

Replacement Cost vs. Actual Cash Value Insurance - which?
When you first head out on your own, insurance isn't always high up there on your priority list.  Many times you'll look for the cheapest rate, doesn't matter what sort of insurance it is.  Is that the smartest thing to do? It depends.  Educate yourself first and then make a decision based on your checkbook and possessions.  ACV will only pay for an item's depreciated value rather than the cost of full replacement. For example:  Your couch burns up due to careless smoking.  You paid $700 for it 10 years ago.  ACV will apply deductions for depreciation of the piece by age and condition.  If they figure it's just worth $100 now, that's what you will receive.  Replacement Cost trumps ACV Replacement cost terms mean the policy covers a piece of property for the amount it will cost to replace it with a comparable one, without deducting anything for depreciation.  Depending...

Can furniture be cleaned properly after a fire?

Can furniture be cleaned properly after a fire?
Can your furniture be saved after a fire? If you've been through the trauma of a house fire, you're no doubt wondering if your furniture, among other things, can be saved.  After you see the results of soot and smoke everywhere, you may find yourself wondering if the fire should have just kept going and you can just start over again!  Take heart though, all is NOT lost! Does it matter WHAT burned? This isn't something the average homeowner will consider, but it can make a difference in how easily things clean up.  The burning of natural materials (wood, natural fabrics, etc.) generally give off a dry smoke residue free of oil and grease which will increase the efforts needed to clean.  Protein fires (the burning of meat, oil or other organic matter) and synthetic material fires (plastics, nylon, polyester, etc.) give off an oily residue that is greasy to...

Cleaning up after a fire

Cleaning up after a fire
This past February, we had a major disaster at our home.  My 85 year old mother forgot to turn off a pot of turkey legs and then we left for church.  You can only imagine the smell and smoke!  I was so grateful we had a dog door because I'm sure the smoke would've killed our pets.  That and the smoke alarms shrieking had unnerved them big-time!   So here I am, having been on dozens (literally) of fire disasters and cleaning up now after experiencing one of my own!  Right away we opened all the windows, turned on fans and got the pot off the stove!  The problem with burned meat, even if it doesn't ignite, is that it gets over everything.   In the restoration business it's called a "protein fire."  The horrible smell is actually the meat molecules rotting on all surfaces it came in contact with;...

Safeguarding Your Important Documents From Disasters

Safeguarding Your Important Documents From Disasters
When people suffer the loss of their home and possessions in a tornado, flood, or fire, it is often the treasured family photos and documents that are missed the most.  Fortunately today there are many options for insuring that these family records are not lost forever.  One of your best bets will be to keep the originals or copies in a safe deposit box.  If that isn’t an option for you, a heavy-duty metal fire proof box kept on a high shelf can also work.  It may be wise to keep the copies in a separate location from the originals so that if one set is destroyed, the other will be safe.  Keeping them at a friend or relatives house may be a viable alternative. Another way to preserve your documents is to scan them into an electronic format that can be kept on a CD or external hard drive. ...
