7 Backyard Landscaping Tips to Prevent Basement Flooding

7 Backyard Landscaping Tips to Prevent Basement Flooding
The warmer temps, the more your green thumb may be itching to dig in the dirt. As you work with the flowers, plants, and trees that accent your garden beds, backyard, and home’s exterior, remember there’s more to landscaping than just growing your curb appeal.  Properly landscaping the perimeter of your home can help prevent water from leaching into basements and below-grade rooms during periods of increased rainfall or accidental water hazards, such as a neighbor’s above-ground pool bursting and flooding onto your property. If you’ve never taken water damage precautions via landscaping methods to help protect your home, summer is a great time to do so. Use the following tips to plant the seeds of your home’s future safety. Grade your yard. To avoid incoming water, the ground should always slope away from your home in all direction surrounding your perimeter. You’ll need to understand the high and low...

Push Pier Installation
Our Home Services Foreman, David, installing Push Piers inside a basement. A section of concrete was removed and will be replaced when the Push Piers are in place. Is Your Foundation Putting Your Home at Risk?

Is Your Foundation Putting Your Home at Risk?
Your foundation is the literal groundwork of your home. If problems affect it, you risk safety, value, health, and appearance. What could start out as a small crack or a not-so troubling thin trickle of water could turn into serious structural and support issues if left unattended. Detecting warning signs early may be the best way to prevent minor damage form becoming more severe, and to do so requires understanding of what your foundation is trying to say. The Faults in Your Foundation  Regardless of your foundation type--be it a slab, crawl space, basement, or other--the stronger and more resilient it is, the less stress it means for you. And to maintain that strength means keeping a vigilant eye out to ensure any issues are resolved as quickly as possible. While you and your foundation may speak a different language, there are few common ways it will indicate when...

Spring into Undoing Winter Damage

Spring into Undoing Winter Damage
As snow and ice give way to flower buds, grass sprouts, and sunshine, it’s time to take a fresh look at the shape of your home. Winter, with its cold temperatures, icicles, and harsh winds may have done a number to your exterior. Hefty damage might be easy to spot but don’t overlook the little problems that could cost you big time later.  According to the Insurance Information Institute , winter storms can cause expensive damage, with an estimated $1 billion in insured losses reported in 2016. While only a small percentage of those losses are caused by winter storms and other types of damaging wind, hail, and flooding, they can still come with a large price tag. And if the damage goes untended, the amount needed to restore your home could increase the longer you wait. Spring Exterior Inspections  Once warm weather welcomes you back outdoors for springtime chores, take...

Stop Winter from Wrecking Your Foundation

Stop Winter from Wrecking Your Foundation
You might not often associate wet basements with winter, as spring, summer, and fall are typically when rainfall is at its highest. But just because cold temperatures turn the wet stuff into snow, ice, and sleet doesn’t mean it’s any less of hazard to a dry basement. Winter Weather and Your Foundation A solid foundation is critical to the safety and comfort of your home, but water can lead to foundation damage in the way of bowed walls , wall cracks , or sinking cement . But these indicators of a wet basement aren’t the only way to know if you have a potential foundation problem at play. Warning signs also include doors or windows sticking or not opening and closing properly, and visible cracks in walls, ceilings, doorway headers, and in vinyl and ceramic floor tiles throughout your entire home. There are plenty of outdoor measures you can take...

Why Are My Basement Walls Bowing?

Why Are My Basement Walls Bowing?
Barring an unconventional, artistic approach to home design, walls are meant to be flat and level. When walls begin to round out--or “bow”--there’s likely something more problematic happening to the structure of your home. Bowed Basement Walls While any wall has the potential to bow, bowing most commonly occurs in basement walls , which in turn can weaken the entire structure of your home--not just the basement. When foundation walls appear to be bending or leaning, it is typically caused by hydrostatic pressure . In layman’s terms, that means the soil surrounding your basement foundation is holding excess water and creating a natural force on the exterior of your concrete. That force has the power to allow water to seep into cracks naturally formed in the concrete, as well as create enough pressure to cause walls to buckle, bulge, or bow. Bowed Basement Wall Repair Options If you want to...
