Can My Roof Hold Santa & His Sleigh?

Roof-maintenance-checklist-to-prevent-water-damage-during-winter-Lamunyon-Cleaning-and-Restoration-Services-of-Manhattan-Clay-Center-Salina-Junction-City-McPherson-Great-Bend-Topeka-Kansas
While elves are busy making toys for good little girls and boys, your children might have some concerns about the logistics of Santa delivering their presents on Christmas Eve. After all, there are a lot of houses and children to visit in just a few hours, so the smoother the landing zone, the better! We thought we’d help you put your child’s mind at ease about your house being Santa-ready – specifically about making sure your roof is ready to hold Santa, his sleigh, and his eight tiny reindeer.  First, let’s set the scene. According to The Telegrap h , Santa’s sleigh weighs more than 2 million tons, once loaded down with toys. Is Your Home Properly Insulated?

Is Your Home Properly Insulated?
Blanket Fiberglass Insulation[/caption] The insulation in your home--within your walls, ceilings, basements, and attic and crawl spaces--is kind of like the big puffy coat you wear outside in the winter. Wearing it means you’ll stay warm and toasty, while going without means a chilly day indeed. Insulation works sort of the same way. The better insulated your home, the more comfortable the temperature will be throughout. This applies in summer, too. Unlike your winter coat, appropriate insulation can also help to keep your home cool. When the mercury is on the rise outside, insulation will ensure any air conditioning you do on the inside isn’t a waste. Instead it will keep cool air from escaping through walls, ceilings, and such, and prevent hot pockets of air from building up in your home.   Types of Insulation [caption id="attachment_1473" align="alignright" width="150"] Blown In Cellulose Insulation[/caption]To keep your home’s temperature consistent throughout, as...

Ice Dams and Roof Damage - how to prevent them!

Ice Dams and Roof Damage - how to prevent them!
What is an Ice Dam and How Does it Form? Initially I thought an ice dam was formed by blocked gutters; nope!  While dams can extend into a gutter if the conditions permit, it's all a matter of proper and improper insulation and ventilation.  In a perfect world, the melting ice and snow would flow off into your gutters and away from the house.  However, when outside air temps are very low, the edge of the roof stays below freezing and the water refreezes where the interior roof surface is not being warmed by the attic.  This refreezing gradually creates a "dam", a growing heap of ice that blocks the path of melted snow.  Once the dam is large enough, the melted snow that pools up behind it can force its way back under the roof shingles and then leak into your home! How do you Prevent an Ice Dam?...
